In a Malaysian context, few things to note:
1. Those news articles that one reads about equal 50% distribution to the wife spouse in foreign countries, won’t apply in Malaysia.
2. Malaysia family law generally recognises ‘direct’ financial contribution to matrimonial assets/homes (i.e. the family that the family lived in) and holiday homes/investments homes or other forms of assets by the wife spouse but not ‘indirect’ contribution i.e. in the form of time spent/invested taking care of the family etc.
3. Alimony payments are generally allowable for the welfare of the kids if the custody of the child/children is with the wife spouse (of course, generally the husband spouse will get visitation rights too).
4. Alimony payments for wife spouse are generally available too, and would be more difficult if the wife spouse is also a working adult.
5. There is a presumption of custody of the child in favour of the wife spouse especially if the child/children is below the age of 7.
