On September 14th 2017, a fire incident involving a religious school shook the nation. About 23 people including 21 teenage boys were killed in the incident, which raised concern for safety precautions to be taken against such incidents in buildings, especially schools.
The Bar Council of Malaysia made few suggestions in order to combat such incidents in the future, among them are as follows:
- To establish a Royal Comission of Inquiry in order to inquire into the factors that caused the fire incident.
- To conduct inquiries against religious schools and dorms in Malaysia and ensure that they follow the guidelines set by the Local Government Act 1976, Akta Perkhidmatan Bomba 1988 and other relevant laws.
- Check and ensure that every operating religious school and dorm in Malaysia owns operating license and has obtained the Certificate of Completion and Compliance as required by The Ministry of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government.
- Update the criteria that are required to be fulfilled in order to allow private religious schools and dorms to operate.
